the functional fitness story

Built for the People the Fitness Industry Left Behind

Functional Fitness was born from a simple but powerful belief — every person deserves a gym that was built for them. Not just the athletes. Not just the people who grew up in the weight room. Everyone.

Where It Started

In 2011, Trevor Wittwer opened the doors of Functional Fitness in Redwood Falls, Minnesota — his hometown. He'd noticed something in the fitness world that he couldn't ignore.

Walk into almost any gym and you'd see the same thing. The cardio equipment was packed. The weight room? Intimidating, unfamiliar and can feel a little unwelcoming — especially if you didn't grow up there.

And it made complete sense. Most people didn't know what to do with a barbell. They didn't want to get hurt. They didn't want to look silly. And nobody had ever shown them that strength training could change their life.

So Trevor built a gym specifically for that person. The one defaulting to the treadmill not because they loved it — but because it was the only thing that felt safe.

When it came time to name it, Trevor was clear — his name would not be on the door. No "Trevor's Gym." No "Wittwer Fitness." Because it was never about him.

It was about the member.

That decision set the tone for everything that came after — how we hire, how we coach, how we serve and how we grow.

The World is Catching Up

Back in 2011, defaulting to cardio was the norm. The weight room was a place for athletes and bodybuilders — not for the everyday person just trying to feel better and move well.

Today something exciting is happening across the fitness world. More and more people are reaching for weights over the treadmill. The research has caught up. The conversation has shifted. Strength training is finally getting the recognition it has always deserved.

We'd like to think we played a small part in that — at least for the members who've walked through our doors over the past 14 years.

Trevor saw this coming in 2011. He built something for the people the fitness industry was leaving behind — and the world is finally catching up.

The Evolution of Functional Fitness

For more than a decade Functional Fitness was built around group training. Every session covered the major movements, the workout was scaled up or down for the group and rotated every four to six weeks. Members showed up, worked hard and went home.

It worked. And for a long time it was enough.

But somewhere along the way we realized our members deserved more. Not just modifications to a group workout — but real, intentional personalization. Programming built specifically for them. For their body, their history, their goals and their limitations.

In 2024 we made the decision to transition fully away from group training — what we called team training — to semi-private training.

Today every Functional Fitness member has their own personalized program. One that addresses ongoing ailments, acute aches and pains and the specific things their body needs to move and feel better. Progress is tracked. Results are measured. Nothing is guesswork.

It's the best change we've made in 14 years of business — and our members feel it.

Because showing up was never the hard part. Getting exactly what you need when you get there — that's what changes everything.

How We Grew

As Functional Fitness grew we recognized something important — small towns don't just need gyms. They need experiences. Wellness options. The kind of things you'd normally have to drive an hour to find.

So we built more than a gym. Alongside premium programming and personalized coaching we added an infrared sauna, water massage tables and red light therapy. A one-stop wellness experience right in the heart of rural Minnesota — because small towns deserve access to the same quality of care you'd find in a major city.

What started as one gym in Redwood Falls in 2011 has grown into something we're incredibly proud of.

Springfield joined the family in 2021 as our first out-of-town location — a community that took a chance on us and has meant the world to us ever since. Sleepy Eye followed in September 2025. Gaylord in December 2025.

Every single community has reinforced the same belief — small towns deserve this. Small towns want this. And we're proud to be the ones showing up for them.

Who We Are

Trevor and Erin Wittwer met playing college basketball at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. They married in 2013 and now have two boys who are their biggest fans and their toughest critics.

Trevor grew up in Redwood Falls and has always been deeply rooted in small town Minnesota. That upbringing shapes everything about how they run their businesses — with genuine care for the people they serve and a deep respect for the communities that trust them.

Erin has been by Trevor's side through every expansion, every challenge and every incredible moment that comes with building something meaningful from scratch.

They're not a corporate gym. Not a franchise. Just two former college athletes who believe small towns deserve big experiences — and show up every day to prove it.

Giving Back

Building businesses in small communities comes with a responsibility we take seriously — giving back to the people who support us.

Every March, in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, we run a fundraiser in honor of our youngest son, who was born with Down Syndrome. Funds raised go directly to Service Enterprises Inc, an organization that serves individuals with disabilities in the Redwood area. This past March our community helped us raise $1,635.

Every December we run a fundraiser for Share the Spirit, which provides gifts and food for local families in need during the holidays. This past December we raised $1,250 together.

We're always open to supporting causes and organizations in every community we call home. If you know of something we should be part of — reach out. We mean it.

If you've ever felt like fitness wasn't built for you — it was built for you here. And if you want to be part of a community that genuinely looks out for each other — you're already in the right place.
